My career has been driven by my ability to find the Radically Original Idea that dramatically alters my client’s (or employer’s) trajectory.

Starting at WGBH/Boston, one of the nation’s leading public broadcasting stations, I was put in charge of “premiums”, the gifts public TV stations used to give away to incentivize viewers to donate. Nearly immediately, I eliminated my own job by coming up with the idea that “programming is the best premium”. Donations continued unabated, our costs went down, and WGBH was recognized with a national award for innovation.

At Peppers & Rogers Group, a strategic consultancy I helped grow from 10 to 150 employees in three years, I developed a framework called Race for the Best Customers. It created urgency and specificity among our enterprise customers. That single framework generated many millions of dollars in consulting and training revenue.

Fast forward to today, when all of us are not just competing with each other, but also competing with AI, a technology that literally steals ideas from innovative humans and gives it away for $20 a month.

Logic and reason, which formerly drove business success, are no longer sufficient. To compete, you now need two essential elements:

  1. A Radically Original Idea, one that seems wild and crazy at first glance (that’s what cuts through the clutter)

  2. An immense collection of structure that you then build around your new ROI, which creates your defendable competitive advantage

This is what I do: discover your Radically Original Idea.

The right ROI changes everything: your business results, how the world views you, and how you feel about yourself.

I only take on clients who are committed to not only find your new ROI, but also to build structure on top of it. To put this another way, my job is to find your ROI; your job is to embrace and run with it.
